The Historic Monterey Club Golf Course is located in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, an area steeped in Civil War history; the community is best known for being the birthplace – adjacent to the first tee -- of Wallis Simpson, who married King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom). Built before 1885, the Historic Monterey Golf Course is one of the 5 oldest golf courses in the United States and the oldest in southwest Pennsylvania.
The course was originally built as part of the Monterey Inn; in 1903 the Monterey Country Club was established as a summer resort retreat by a group of prominent businessmen from Baltimore and Washington, D. C. One of the distinguishing features of Monterey is its classic shingle style club house. American Presidents Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge and Dwight D. Eisenhower have all played the Monterey Country Club course.
The Monterey Golf Course is opening this Spring (early April) under the leadership of Jennifer Campbell an experienced course manager, and long time local resident.
The course is in excellent condition and flourishing under new management. Long known as a walker’s course, the links-style course layout is not without its challenges. No. 1 for example, a dog leg right, is protected by an ancient oak tree at the corner, ready to capture any wayward drive. No. 2, a 175 yd. par 3, is perhaps the most difficult hole on the course. The green is protected on the left by another large oak and a seasonal stream. It is also bounded on the right by a tree-lined hazard. A straight ball here is essential; there is no room for error.
The majority of Historic Monterey Golf Course is adjacent to Happle’s Meadow, a unique mountain top wetlands and wildlife preserve that forms a continuous out-of-bounds along the right side challenging every golfer to avoid a slice.
Historic Monterey is the perfect course for beginners and more seasoned players who enjoy a slower pace of play atop beautiful South Mountain.
